It was just a little after midnight on a December night in 2016, and Tom Brady was in a meeting with the Patriots’ front office.
The Patriots had a new quarterback in Bill Belichick, who had become the most decorated coach in NFL history.
They had a superstar running back, Shane Vereen, who was about to be named the league’s offensive player of the year.
And their franchise was on the verge of finally being recognized.
As Brady and the rest of the Patriots looked on, the New York Jets were taking on the Cleveland Browns, and the Patriots were poised to beat them.
This was a chance for Brady and Belichick to have their first ever meeting.
As the meeting started, a couple of minutes into it, Brady asked his staff to hold a press conference.
He was expecting to get an opportunity to thank Belichick, but instead he was being asked to address the Jets, the team he had coached the past five years.
The first question he was asked was what was the best way to celebrate the Patriots win.
“The best way would be to give a shout out to our fans,” Brady said.
“They were the most passionate people on the planet.
We’re just so grateful to them for making this happen.”
Brady’s statement ended the night with a standing ovation, followed by a chorus of “Merry Christmas” from the crowd.
It was a great moment for Brady, who would go on to become one of the NFL’s most popular athletes.
But for the Jets and Brady, the meeting had been a disaster.
When asked what his thoughts were about the season, Brady told reporters that the team’s season was “over” and that they would “never get back to the level of success that we had.”
It was the second season in a row that the Jets had been beaten in the AFC East.
After the season ended, the Jets hired John Idzik to replace Brady.
“John’s been great for us,” Belichick said.
Idzik is now the Jets’ coach, but he has had some of the same problems that Brady has.
The Jets lost a season-high 14 games last year.
They were eliminated in the divisional round of the playoffs, where they lost to the Indianapolis Colts.
“We knew how important we were to this organization, and we weren’t going to make it,” Brady told Sports Illustrated.
“And I know how important I was to them.
But I think they realized they didn’t have to play with us, so they got the coach they wanted, and they got an offensive coordinator they wanted.
I think that’s the right decision for them.”
Idzik had his moments. “
He’s got a different way of thinking, and he’s going to be able bring that to the next level.”
Idzik had his moments.
He coached the Jets to the AFC Championship game in his first year in the league, losing to the Colts.
In his second season, he was fired in December of 2016 after the Jets went 2-8.
It’s not clear whether he will have a role in the Jets going forward.
The next time the Jets were at home, Idzik replaced Brady, and it was not the most successful year in franchise history.
The team went 3-10 and lost in the wild-card round of Super Bowl LI.
The year before that, they had won four consecutive AFC Championship games.
After a year-long suspension, Brady was reinstated.
In 2018, the Patriots beat the Jets in the Super Bowl, but it was his second losing season.
The season after that, he won just one more game, a 34-17 loss to the New England Patriots in the 2018 AFC Championship.
After that, Belichick went on to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Brady’s career is on a roll, but not without controversy.
In 2014, he had to pay $1 million to a former girlfriend in exchange for a restraining order against him.
The woman later filed a lawsuit, and Brady was eventually released from prison and placed on probation.
In May, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, and was sentenced to five days in jail.
During the Superbowl, he hit a woman in the face, which led to a $25,000 fine.
He also was suspended for four games, and fined $1,500.
Brady is now on a five-year contract with the Jets.
But, while he’s enjoyed some success, he has faced criticism for some of his decisions.
In 2016, he suspended New England’s cornerback Darrelle Revis indefinitely for four months, a decision that led to his suspension from the league for four seasons.
Revis later claimed that Brady had told him, “You can’t trust him.
You have to let him play.” In 2017,
