Auburn has been in the news lately for the first time in two decades.
The Tigers are in a tailspin as they prepare for the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette, but a new program is making the team look good.
The College Football Playoff committee announced Thursday that Auburn would join the field this season.
The announcement comes after the SEC released its rankings and Auburn was tied for eighth in the conference.
The Tigers are projected to finish 12th and 13th in the AP rankings and 14th and 15th in both the ESPN and CBS polls.
Auburn, a former national champion, is ranked No. 1 in both of those polls.
The committee will have to announce which teams will participate in the championship game, which will be played Dec. 1 at the Georgia Dome.
Auburn is scheduled to play Florida State in the first game of the SEC Championship, but the FSU game was moved from New Orleans to Atlanta for scheduling reasons.
The Crimson Tide, who lost their national title game to LSU in 2017, are expected to be the only team to advance from the Big 12 Conference.
The league announced its rankings Thursday.
