MISSISSIPPI STATE FBS WINS BIGE LEAGUE TITLE With a thrilling, 10-7 win over Georgia Southern, Michigan State became the first program in school history to win the Big Ten Championship and become a top-25 team in the country.
It is the first time since 1979 that the Spartans won the national championship.
Michigan State finished the season ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in the polls, but dropped four of its last five games and finished with a record of 12-6.
It has won five conference championships in a row.
The Bulldogs lost defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to Ohio State and quarterback Malik Zaire to Alabama.
Both were starters at Ohio State.
Michigan State is currently ranked No: 10 in the Associated Press poll and No: 1 in the AP poll for the fourth straight week.
The Bulldogs are No. 2 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No.: 1 in ESPN’s AP Poll.
In the Big 12, Michigan has a perfect record of 17-0.
In the SEC, the Wolverines are 9-0 and have a perfect 9-1 record.
AUBURN FBS WIN FIRST SEASON IN TENNESSEE SEC After losing to Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal, Auburn’s second-ranked defense allowed only seven points against the Tigers, including one touchdown.
Defensive end Michael Sam was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.
Sam, who is recovering from knee surgery, leads Auburn with 17.5 sacks, is second in the conference with eight interceptions and ranks fifth in the SEC with seven forced fumbles.
Auburn’s defense has allowed just 18 points per game, the fewest in the league.
UTAH STATE’S PATTERNS HAVE HIT THE WINCHESTER After losing for the third time in the last four games, Utah State’s offense has scored a touchdown in five of its past six games.
The Aggies are averaging 30.0 points per contest in the series, which began in 2012.
This season, Utah’s offensive line is allowing just 4.4 yards per carry, including 2.7 yards per rush, the lowest mark in the FBS.
The offensive line has allowed more than 200 yards in a game just twice in the past four seasons.
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE’s WILD CARD STATUS The Gamecocks have been dominant this season, allowing just three teams to score 100 points.
This was the first season the Gamecals have allowed a 100-point total since 2010.
This is the second time in three years that South Carolina State has allowed a team to score more than 100 points in the regular season.
MISSOURI STATE FCS WINS THE SEC Championship After upsetting Missouri in the national semifinal game, Missouri became the only SEC team to beat Mississippi State in the season finale.
The Gamecock defense held the Tigers to only 22 points, which was their lowest total since 2007.
Mississippi State held South Carolina to less than 20 points in all four games this season.
Mississippi State is 8-1 all-time against the Gamecock and is unbeaten in league play.
