On the eve of its first national championship game since 2008, Ohio State and Tennessee are neck-and-neck in the polls.
But with the second round of voting on Tuesday, the Buckeyes lead, 45-35.
The Buckeyes also have a strong resume in the first two rounds of the voting, which is why the Buckeye faithful are ecstatic to have won the Ohio State football title in each of the past two seasons.
Ohio State has taken home the national championship in each season since 2008.
In 2016, the school won its second title in the past four years and the Buckeyes have a perfect record in their three seasons in Columbus.
But Tennessee won its first title since 2011 and this year’s title has been a huge boost to the Vols.
Tennessee’s head coach and the Volunteers’ offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin, were named coaches of the year by both the Associated Press and the Associated College Football Writers.
Kiffin and his staff have helped to build a national championship contender, and now that he is on the sideline, he will be able to coach his players on special teams.
This season, the Volunteers were the first team to win three consecutive games and the first to win four straight games.
The Vols are on a bye week and will take on a team that is in last place in the Big 12, but this team is loaded.
In the second half of the season, Texas is still ranked fourth in the country, but the Longhorns will be coming off a win against a team with a 1-11 record.
Texas will be looking to win a Big 12 championship for the first time since 2012 and it’s not a team Texas fans are used to seeing.
It has been three straight seasons without a Big Ten title.
The Longhorns have won five of the last six games, and they were the only team in the top four to finish with a winning record.
But the Longhorn defense is starting to look a lot like a true championship contender.
Against the Longhorned last year, the offense was unable to score and the defense couldn’t stop Texas from putting up huge scores.
And that’s not to mention the passing game has been phenomenal.
Travis Wilson and Christian Kirk will be the only two true passers on the offensive line.
Wilson is coming off his best season, leading the nation in rushing yards with 2,828.
Kirk is coming into his own with 2.5 yards per carry.
These two are not only a great tandem for a team built around a passing attack, but also a tandem that is a lot more than just a run-first offense.
When Texas gets Wilson on the field, the Volsenians defense will have a lot of trouble.
If the Longhogs defense can put the Volzys’ running game on a fast-break, they have a chance to win the game.
On defense, the Aggies will be relying on their front seven.
For Tennessee, their front three is led by a true sophomore who is a Heisman finalist, sophomore defensive end Justin Simmons and sophomore linebacker DeAndre Washington.
Simmons is one of the best defensive linemen in the nation and Washington has already made an impact on the Volsinas defense.
While Tennessee has been the team to beat in the second and third rounds of this year, they will need a few more wins to have a real chance at winning the title.
With their first-round bye, Tennessee will need to win at least one more game to secure their first conference title since 2009.
As usual, it is the top seed that is going to make the biggest impact.
Auburn, LSU and Michigan State are all in the hunt for the top spot.
