In the third meeting of the year between the two teams, the Scarlet Knights came out on top on Sunday.
With Rutgers outscoring the Volunteers 42-21 to take the lead, sophomore quarterback Jordan Morris made a nice pass to wide receiver Mike Brown that led to a 3-yard touchdown run.
After scoring the second time through the first half, the Volunteers went on a 7-play, 89-yard drive to take a 16-13 lead on a third-and-7.
The Scarlet Knights led 21-10 at halftime.
But after a 4-yard reception from Morris, the teams combined for four scores on their next two possessions.
That included a 23-yard TD run by Brown to extend the lead to 30-17.
Rutgers responded with a 15-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Brandon Banks to set up a 5-yard field goal by senior quarterback David Boren.
It was the third consecutive game that the Scarlet Knight offense has scored a touchdown to take over the game.
Sophomore running back Andrew Williams was also a big factor for the Scarlet Knights, with four rushing yards.
“I think it was really important that they keep that momentum going,” said sophomore safety Tyler Johnson, who caught a long touchdown pass from Banks to put Rutgers up 30-10.
“We did that in the third quarter.
It just shows that you can keep going.”
