Thanksgiving football coach Gary Patterson is no stranger to a bowl win, and he knows how the NCAA tournament works.
But this time, the Redhawks had a serious problem with a bowl game.
Georgia Tech went 1-9 in the regular season after a 5-3 record in the Big Ten, which ended with the loss of a game-winning touchdown to Wisconsin.
That’s when the Yellow Jackets decided to go for the NCAA Tournament title.
The Yellow Jackets have never won a Big Ten championship.
They lost in the Peach Bowl in 2019, a loss that came in a conference championship game.
But Patterson has a new coach in Mark Gottfried, and that’s a big improvement over Gary Andersen.
The Redhawks finished in the top 10 of the Associated Press preseason polls, while the Yellow Jacket finished in second place.
Patterson’s staff was also voted the best in college football.
Patterson said he has high expectations for the season and thinks he has the pieces in place to make a deep run in the NCAA.
GeorgiaTech is playing a season-opening road game against Rutgers on Saturday.
